Joomla! 3.x Setup

Joomla is one of the most famous Content Management System (CMS). As the emergence of web technology rapidly changed and the management of content has become a major concern. Joomla provide the ability for developer to create a website complete with all basic solution especially in managing the content and user control.  Starting from Joomla 1.x, now Joomla 3.x which focus on mobile ready view and more users friendly.  This tutorial aims to go step by step on how to install Joomla 3.x into localhost web server.

 Before setup the Joomla 3.x, it is recommended to read on how to install WAMP server into your computer. WAMP server is web server application for Windows based computer that provide PHP engine, MYSQL and Apache in order to execute PHP script that Joomla used. Source File Preparation

Copy the Joomla! source file (Joomla_3.3.0-Stable-Full_Package.zip) into ‘www’ folder which is targeted at ‘c:\wamp\www’ as shown below:

Extract the Joomla! source file using any archival tools such as WinZIP, WinRAR or 7zip into a folder. At this stage, developer need to extract files in a single folder as shown below:

Rename those folder to developer project name (this sample use your own name). It is recommended to rename the folder with all lowercase letter, no spacing and no symbol.

Joomla! 3.x Installation

Access the ‘localhost’ page and under ‘Your Projects’ should have your folder name. Click your folder name to continue to installation stage.

This is the installation pages for Joomla! 3.x. The installation separated into 3 parts which is configuration, database and overview. First, the configuration information should be identify and fill-in.

1. Select your language file. By default, Joomla! used English (US) [Required]
2. Your site name. This information will display at the tab-windows in web browser [Required]
3. Site description. This description is used by Google to describe your website to online community
4. Your valid email address. This email address is used to be a web administrator email address [Required]
5. Administrator username [Required]
6. Administrator password [Required]
7. Confirmation administrator password (repeat) [Required]

Once complete fill-in everything, click next button to go to database configuration.

For database configuration, please refer below

A. Host name for localhost installation is ‘localhost’ [Required]
B. The default database username is ‘root’ [Required]
C. Leaves the password field blank (set password if any)
D. Give your database name (same with your folder name) [Required]
E. Table prefix is randomly generated by Joomla!. You can change it or just leave it as generated by Joomla! [Required]

*Click next button to go to overview.

In overview, not much to configure here. Just make sure to choose none for install sample data and others just leaves to Joomla! system and just click on install button to begin the installation process.

*Wait until installation process complete. Do not refresh or close the web browser until the installation process complete.

Once the installation complete, Joomla! will display the successful installation page as shown below.

Don’t forget to click on ‘Remove installation folder’ button. The installation folder needs to be removed because of the security measurement. If the installation folder still exist, others people can re-install your website.

After remove the installation folder, developer can choose to display site or directly go to administrator interface. It is recommended to go to view site first.

Access Admin interface + preview web homepage

To view the front-end homepage, just type ‘localhost/yourfoldername’.

To access the administrator page, type ‘administrator’ after your webpage URL. Example: ‘localhost/yourfoldername/administrator’ and click go or enter. The webpage will redirect developer to administrator page to make any amendments to webpage. Login as web administrator using the username and password you create previously.

This is the view for administrator page which is acting as control panel for your webpage. From this control panel, developer will create a category for articles, manage modules, plugins, install component etc.

You've complete installed Joomla! into your localhost! Explore the Joomla function in the administrator interface.
